Currently Merlin is expanding the Excalibur technology across a range of other paddle sports including rowing.

Kayak Paddles

In conjunction with Dr Margi Bohm at the University of Canberra we are currently Beta testing a kayak paddle version of the Excalibur technology.

This unit is very similar to the Excalibur, except that it collects strain data from each end of the paddle, which gives you a curve for both the right and left blades and has the 3 axis accelerometers located at the centre of the shaft.

Mid 2009 we plan to be able to offer datarised 29.4mm dia carbon shafts as OEM parts to other paddle manufacturers of Kayak paddles.

If you are interested in this program and would like to be first in the world to have one of these Kayak paddles please email us.

Surfboat Oars

Assisted by Kim Marsh, we are currently trialling a data oar for surfboats. These oars are a bigger, heavier version of rowing oars and are used in the very competitive surfboat racing that is a common sport on the coast of Australia. Have a look at "Surfboat"in Google images, if you want to see just how mad this sport can be, think rowing up a small tidal wave.

Here you can see the data from a beach, round the buoy and back. Notice the negative pressure on the oar as the boat rounds the buoy and the stroke has his oar in the water acting a pivot.

Rowing Oars

Recently we have starting fitting out rowing oars. Watch this space as there will be some major news and more details here shortly.
